Understand softener workload.

Daily hardness load = measured hardness × treated water use. This illustration does not size a softener or calculate a salt setting.

Actual sizing also depends on usable capacity at the selected salt dose, reserve, peak flow, pressure loss, regeneration frequency and other chemistry.

Take useful questions to your next appointment.

Capacity is not a tank-size label

A softener’s advertised grain rating is not necessarily its efficient working capacity. The selected salt dose, reserve, flow, hardness, other contaminants and regeneration strategy affect design. Ask a professional to document assumptions instead of choosing by tank dimensions alone.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Record the same target, influent test results, flow demand and exact models for each proposal. Separate purchase price from salt, water, cartridges, media, chemicals and service costs. Ask what post-installation verification will be provided.

Plan maintenance from the manual

Record equipment models and manufacturer intervals. Include private-well testing and utility backflow notices where applicable. The worksheet is a recordkeeping aid, not a universal service schedule. Electrical, pressure, gas and sanitation work belongs with appropriately qualified people.

Authentic field evidence

The blank case record separates reported symptoms, measured observations, interpretation, corrective work and verification. It is intentionally a template. No client story, measurement or repair outcome is represented as completed work here.
