Keep the units clear

Hardness is commonly reported in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. About 17.1 mg/L as CaCO₃ equals 1 gpg. Record the unit with the result so two tests can be compared properly.

Cape Coral’s utilities FAQ describes city water as 4–5 gpg. That published general range is not a measurement of your tap and does not describe a private well. A property-specific design should use a suitable current sample.

What belongs in a sizing discussion

  • Measured incoming hardness and any other constituents that affect the design.
  • Household use and peak demand, rather than only the number of bathrooms.
  • The manufacturer’s usable capacity at the intended salt setting.
  • Regeneration frequency and reserve assumptions.
  • Available supply flow, drain arrangement and installation space.
  • How treated-water hardness will be checked after start-up.

Separate three different questions

QuestionWhat to compare
CapacityHow much hardness can the configured system handle between regenerations?
FlowWhat happens when several fixtures run together?
Efficiency and upkeepWhat salt, water and service does the chosen operating setup require?

Understand the ongoing responsibilities

The brine tank needs the correct salt supply and the equipment needs periodic checks according to its manual. A full salt tank does not prove that the unit is regenerating correctly. If hardness returns, record the symptoms and settings shown on the display without changing unfamiliar programming.

Keep the start-up settings and test readings with the equipment record. When usage changes or the water source changes, have the design and settings reviewed. Water softening should not be presented as proof that the water meets every drinking-water standard.

Common questions

That is a property and preference decision. Consider the actual hardness, the problem you want to solve, upkeep and the equipment already installed.

Media, usable capacity, control settings, flow and incoming water can differ even when tanks have similar dimensions.
