Follow the water through the system
The pump moves water from the well. A pressure tank stores water under pressure and works with the controls to manage pump operation. Treatment equipment changes selected water characteristics. The building plumbing then delivers water to fixtures. Individual installations vary.
A component name is not a diagnosis. Low flow at fixtures can call for a different investigation from rapid pump cycling, an electrical trip or a system that cannot build pressure.
What the main components do
| Component | Role | Useful information to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Well and pump | Supply and move water | Available well record, pump model and installation history |
| Pressure tank | Provide usable stored water and support controlled cycling | Tank model and a description of cycling behavior |
| Switch or controller | Manage pump operation | Visible model information and fault indication, without opening covers |
| Treatment | Address selected water conditions | Equipment models and when maintenance was last performed |
| Distribution | Deliver water within the property | Whether one or many fixtures are affected |
Build a simple equipment record
Photograph readable labels from a safe position. Keep invoices, manuals and water-test results together. Record which contractor installed each part. This reduces guesswork when a property changes owners or another technician visits.
An existing well does not mean the water has been tested recently. Florida recommends annual bacteria and nitrate testing; additional tests may be appropriate after an event or a change in water conditions.
When to stop and call
Do not open electrical controls, bypass a pressure switch or work on pressurized equipment to troubleshoot a webpage symptom. If equipment is flooded, smoking, damaged or cycling abnormally, avoid contact and obtain professional guidance.
For loss of water, describe the symptoms and ask about current availability. For a drinking-water concern, follow the health department or laboratory’s instructions rather than relying on taste or odor.
