What the camera can help document

Depending on access and visibility, footage may show roots, deposits, displaced joints, cracks, standing water or an obstruction. A sonde and locator can help estimate the position of the camera head for further investigation.

The footage is a view of the pipe interior at the time of inspection. An obstruction, bend or flooded section may prevent the camera from reaching or seeing part of the line. The report should say where the inspection stopped.

Observation versus conclusion

ObservationReasonable next question
Water remains in part of the pipeCould this be a downstream restriction, a low section or another condition? What further checks establish the cause?
A root is visibleWhere is the apparent entry point and is the joint or fitting visible?
The camera cannot advanceIs the limitation a bend, access issue, debris or a suspected defect?
A distance appears on screenWhere was the counter zeroed, and how was the surface location checked?

Request a report you can use

  • Date, property identifier and technician or company.
  • Entry point, travel direction and inspected extent.
  • Video or images tied to the written observations.
  • Pipe material and size only when reasonably established.
  • Location estimates distinguished from surveyed measurements.
  • Visibility limits, uninspected sections and recommended follow-up.

Do not overread a single image

Standing water in a picture does not, by itself, measure pipe slope. A precise grade claim needs an appropriate measurement method and context. Similarly, one visible defect does not prove that every section of the sewer is defective.

For a repair decision, ask the plumber to connect the footage to the proposed excavation or replacement limits. If cleaning is needed to improve visibility, confirm whether a second inspection is included.

Common questions

No. It documents the accessible interior and the limits of that inspection. Concealed exterior conditions and uninspected branches remain outside the view.

Yes. Share the complete report and its limitations so each contractor is pricing the same known conditions and scope.
