One fixture or the whole house?

A slow sink alone does not mean the building sewer needs replacement. Several fixtures backing up together may involve a shared drain, the building sewer or the receiving system. A property connected to a septic system needs a different downstream check from a sewer-connected property.

If sewage is entering the home, stop using fixtures that feed the affected system. Keep people and pets away from the contaminated area. Do not keep flushing to see whether the problem has cleared.

Four different jobs, four different outcomes

TaskPurposeQuestion to ask
Cable clearingCreate a path through a blockage with an appropriate toolHas flow only been restored, or has the line been cleaned?
HydrojettingUse water and suitable nozzles to clean deposits from accessible pipeIs the pipe condition suitable and where will debris go?
Camera inspectionRecord visible conditions inside reachable pipeCan I receive the video and a description of any limits?
Sewer repairCorrect a documented physical defectWhich exact section is included and what restoration is covered?

A recurring backup deserves a record

Note the date of each incident, the fixtures involved and what the previous service accomplished. A temporary opening can drain normally while deposits, roots or an underlying defect remain. Repetition alone does not prove that the entire sewer must be replaced.

When access and visibility allow, inspection can help distinguish cleaning needs from repair needs. A dirty or flooded pipe may limit what can be seen. Ask whether an initial clearing and a later inspection are separate steps.

Know the downstream system

Before approving work, identify whether the line discharges to a utility sewer or an onsite system. Confirm the boundary between private plumbing and utility responsibility with the provider. A blockage downstream of the section being serviced can affect the result.

Commercial grease lines need their own maintenance discussion. Cleaning a line and maintaining a grease interceptor are different scopes. Ask for a service record that identifies the line, access point, direction and limitations.

Common questions

No. Restored flow is an outcome of clearing. It does not, by itself, establish that a structural problem has been corrected.

No. Pipe condition, access, blockage type and downstream capacity affect the choice. The method should follow the assessment.
